Charles van Otterdijk

Charles van Otterdijk is a visual artist researching the field of withdrawal, hiding and detaining. Although he is showing his research by means of objects and installations with references to design his work can hardly be seen as comfortable additions to an interior. It is rather a mental exploration in a threedimensional way to do with withdrawal, hiding and detaining than objects meant for actual use.

One of his last projects was the production of a series of 7 books, Die Lausnitz Bücher, about hiding places and observation posts in a German forest. Lausnitz is a small village in the former East Germany the artist is connected with through family ties and where he is often staying to this day. In this surrounding Charles van Otterdijk stumbled across hidden residencies, observation posts and other signs of a withdrawn life during his wanderings through the woods.

Recent exhibitions include TENT. Rotterdam, SUPER! 1st contemporary visual arts, fashion and design triennial, Hasselt, NICC Antwerp and Künstlerhaus Dortmund.
